在美洲大陸，嚼菸（chewing tobacco）和棒球的緊密關係，存在已超過一世紀之久。球員褲子後口袋裡塞著菸草罐，鼓著臉頰嚼食菸草的畫面，頻繁出現在電視甚至球員卡的肖像上。1994年棒球電影《小子大聯盟》中，更有小男主角看著球員用口香糖捲著菸草，然後整坨吞入口中的一幕。

巨人龐加納不嚼也OK
球星行為引起效尤，棒球成了菸草戕害下一代的媒介？這隻黑手明年起將被切斷，至少從巨人隊的AT&T球場開始。根據華裔市長李孟賢於今年5月簽署的法令，舊金山市所有運動場所明年1月1日起全面禁止嚼菸，包括巨人隊主場。

「這個趨勢是擋不住的，」非營利組織「讓兒童遠離菸草」主席麥爾斯透過推動城市立法，要把菸草踢出大聯盟。他說，年底前可望還有6個大聯盟球隊所在城市通過類似法案，洛杉磯市議會也已提案。「唯一的問題是，是明年就有足夠的城市讓大聯盟成為『無菸空間』，還是要再等1年？」麥爾斯質疑。嚼菸對健康的影響的確有直接關係，早年有嚼菸習慣的史上第3快3千安強打、8屆國聯打擊王「教士先生」關恩（Tony Gwynn），去年因唾液腺癌辭世時年僅54歲。而麥爾斯等反菸人士認為，這不只損害個人健康，明星球員嚼菸帶壞年輕人，才是更嚴重的問題。其實，棒球員嚼菸的比例已經減少，根據「職棒防護員協會」統計，目前約有3分之1的大聯盟球員仍有嚼菸習慣，已比20年前少了一半。只是嚼菸的美國高中生仍居高不下，根據加州大學的近期調查，比例仍高達15％。依照大聯盟最新版的勞資集體協議（CBA），球員不可以在接受電視訪問時嚼菸，也不能在球迷入場後帶著菸草罐，惟相關禁令並無罰則。麥爾斯為此兩度找上球員工會，卻獲得無法強制禁止的答案，反菸運動只好轉為城市立法，並選擇向來以進步風氣著稱的舊金山開始下手，也成功踏出第一步。相關法令上路後，不但地主巨人隊球員「禁嚼」，客隊與入場觀眾都得遵守。執法方面，據了解市府並不會派遣更多警力進駐球場，但歡迎民眾檢舉，也考慮授權球場可以直接開單，打造AT&T球場成為大聯盟第一個「無菸空間」。(中國時報)
